Turbonique, a wild rear engine!

by HoTWire 30. January 2009 03:02

To end rear engine week here comes a wild one! Turbonique was a fairly short lived company set up in the early sixties in the USA with the aim of providing acceleration freaks with a new way of getting high - with the aid of rocket fuels.. One product was the stand alone, self powered supercharger that used a rocket fuelled turbine capable of providing a massive boost to the intake charge at the touch of a button.

Fantastic as that is, the rear engine connection and focus of this article is the “Drag Axle”. Again this was a rocket powered turbine mounted behind, and connected to, the rear axle. The car could be driven as normal by its conventional engine but once the button was hit the rear mounted rocket would fire, supplying 1000hp or more direct to the rear axle through a second driveshaft.

The best photo I have found of this arrangement in action is this one courtesy of Hot Rod Magazine. Nine or even eight second quarter mile times were possible.

There is also an excellent gallery of various Turbonique equipped vehicles courtesy of The Rocket Man who will also sell you reprints of the original catalogues and technical manuals.

Last year a time warp condition Ford Galaxie fitted with a Drag Axle (and a very potent supercharged V8 up front) was presented at a Mecum auction in the US and realised $375,000 in the sale.

As a star lot they even provided prospective purchasers with a video on U-tube. Unfortunately I doubt that the new owner will ever risk pressing THAT button

A barn fresh Turbonique equipped Mercury Cougar race car also surfaced at a show a couple of years ago as blogged here:

For more information on Turbonique and its products including “The Black Widow” oval window VW these links are a must.

We hope you enjoyed Rear Engine week, we certainly did, we will probably be revisiting it later this year for a second round.

Sadly the guy who developed these products ended up in jail for mail fraud.  Turns out the "kits" he was selling were far from "complete" and disapointed customers queued up to sue.  Shame that they weren't better developed or supported.  Shame nobody else really picked up the batton with this either.  A company called Twisted Sanity were developing car based rocket boosters as well as a range of nitrous oxide products here in the UK but they went very quiet and their website seems to have disappeared now.

The Tobacco King Ford is truly an awesome bit of engineering. My RS2600 Ford Capri sat next to it on special invitational display at Carlisle, PA a few years ago. The owner transported the Tobacco King along with a dedicated mechanic.

lol a couple of the reviews bloggers write are really silly and unrelated, there are times i think about whether they in fact read the articles before writing or whether they merely look at the subject of the blog post and compose the very first thought that drifts to their minds. Anyway, it is nice to see a unique commentary from time to time in contrast to the exact same, traditional blog vomit which I oftentimes notice on the blogs. Cheers

lol a couple of the reviews bloggers write are silly and unrelated, there are times i think about whether they at all read the post before writing or whether they only look at the subject of the post and compose the very first idea that comes into their minds. However, it is great to see a smart commentary every now and then in contrast to the exact same, traditional blog bull which I usually notice on the blogs. Cheers

While this subject may be very sensitive for most individuals, my opinion is that there needs to be a center or widespread ground that all of us can find. I do appreciate that youve added related and intelligent commentary right here though.

I entirely accept as true with the above comment, the web is with a doubt growing into an important medium of communication across the globe & its because of websites similar to this that ideas are spreading so quickly.
