RSM : Linklog 070808

So it has been a while since we had a link log entry, the internet is still full of great car related sites, so lets have a look at which has been rocking our socks for the past few weeks.

First up this is a really retro set of photographs the Shorpy website is a fantastic collection of old photographs, it has much to look at, for us though the best stuff is in the classic car section : http://www.shorpy.com/classic-car-photos many hours can be lost studying these little snapshots of a world long gone.

Next we're off to Sweden for some racing cars, the Modsport Drivers Associations has a really nice website with reports, pictures, results and film clips.  It is easy enough to follow what is where even if you don't speak Swedish, you can see some outstanding racing cars : http://www.modsport.scorpionshops.com/index.htm

Where to next in our international whistle stop tour of the internet,.. Why Japan of course.  It is no secret that we love the Japanese scene here at RSM, so we thought you might also enjoy this build up of a Nissan 510 Drag racing car, from purchase to first race and beyond.  Fantastic! : http://www.0-4factory.com/510DRAG-1.htm

So on to our video.  One of our stated aims when we started Retro Scene Mag was to reflect the world wide Retro scene, this video perfectly reflects the reality of competing in Hillclimbs, really well filmed and evocative of how it is lived.

RSM Linklog : Racing Week Special

In preperation for this week being Racing Car Week on RSM, I'm going to warm you all with a few racing car links.

Super Saloons were one of the great 70's racing series with some wild space framed creations bring piloted by the likes of Gerry Marshall and Mick Hill.  This site has been around for years, but it is always worth revisiting, the wealth of cars here and the snapshot of an era of racing is well worth your time : http://www.racing70s.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/racing70s/menus/menucontents.htm

Along with our love of racing cars comes our love of Japanese cars, so what do we love most, thats right, Japanese racing cars!  First up have a selection of cars from Group C through to JGTC and Rally cars from this site, click the links on the left to get some great pictures.  Whilst we're in Japan have a browse of this gallery of racing Nissan Sunnys.

Finally for these links I'll give you one of the best racing websites on the internet, Frank De Jong's European touring car site is fantastically comprehensive, with photos and results from across the years.  It is such a great site to bookmark and just browse around occasionally.  When considering your next project it is always worth checking out what got raced in various forms, some of it is rather suprising : http://touringcarracing.net/

Lets have a great racing video to top off this little lot.  When I say a great video, I mean the greatest racing video that exists.  This is motorsport at its greatest.

So that should get you in the mood for this weeks content. Racing cars all the way for a week.

It's the RSM Linklog 'Rmad Special' - catchy title, eh? I've been handed the retro reigns for this week as HoTWire is busy preparing his trusty Sunny for the Retro and Sportscar Action Day at Castle Combe. Let's get on with the links then, shall we?

All this talk of the South American 'rebaixados' scene has got me thinking about obscure Brazilian oddities again and one of the most iinteresting places to trawl through and learn about stuff you've never heard of is the Brazilian's ebay equivalent Mercardo Livre, our link takes you straight to the classic car section:

http://veiculos.mercadolivre.com.br/carros-antigos/

Well that passed an hour or so didn't it...Gurgels, Pumas, Saveiros and the like. Let's have another from that side of the world before we don our world explorer outfit (a rather fetching pith helmet and light khaki suit in my case) again and head off elsewhere. You don't need to be a GM afficionado for this one and you should be able to work your way around without a translator relatively easily with brochure scans, wallpapers and some great links falling to hand after a few well chosen clicks:

 www.opala.com

Time for a video I think - in Australia now, where I'm told you'll find pairs of black lines and circles up and down every street. I believe 'hooning' is the word. Well here's a top level Torana (and those Aussie's certainly build 'em clean) making some of those tell-tale tyre tracks:

Whilst we're in the mood for some stonkin' V8s and the smell of burnt rubber from down under we'll visit burnouts unlimited...

www.burnoutsunlimited.com

..which lives up to it's name admirably. It's unlikely to win any design awards but more than makes up for it with event coverage, features and pages and pages of burnout pics 'n' vids. It's horsepower heaven!

Before you all accuse me of favouring the V8 side of things from our Antipodean chums I shall redress the balance with the awesome publicatation known as Fast Fours:

 www.fastfours.com.au

One should find plenty to entertain oneself, including some pretty interesting engine transplants.

That's all from me folks, normal service should be resumed next week.

A distinctly international feel to proceedings today.  I hope you got your Google Translate handy

First up we are off to the Americas, by way of Sweden.  Check out this thread on the Rejsa forums from someone who took part in the Carrera Pan America, it is a brilliant event and is hugely challenging for the cars involved, as you will see by some of the photographs in this particular entrants report : http://rejsa.nu/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27960

One of the most popular thing about the Retro Rides forums the Readers Rides section, when I'm browsing other sites I always look for similar sections as it is a great way to get to know whats that forum is all about.  The German Old School Garage forum has a brilliant readers project section, you can spend many hours checking out their array of machinery, some finished, some still in the works : http://www.osg-forum.de/viewforum.php?f=3

We linked Speed Hunters before but this particular entry really caught my eye, I love racing cars and they didn't get much more insane than the peak of the Group 5 Le Man cars.  This link has some great photography which is really evocative of the period : http://speedhunters.com/archive/2008/06/05/retrospective-gt-gt-group-5-monsters-at-le-mans.aspx

Finally as a follow up to Rmad's post, have some madness from Japan

There we go, around the world in a handful of links, our scene is international!

Its that time of the week again,.. more links for your delight and delectation..

When you are looking through image galleries, particularly ones overseas, you often see the same cars come up again and again.  The problem is often that you can't find out any more about them, you just have the picture to look at.  So we were really pleased to find the website for a Japanese red Nissan 510 Wagon that has been popping up in galleries for the last few years :
http://red.ap.teacup.com/bloodbird510/  What is even more satisfying is that there are loads more pictures in there of the car in question and other shows its attended.  Great stuff.

It would be remiss of us not to link to Speed Hunters this week.  Mike from Auto-Otaku is providing content for the new collaborative blog/site/forum/thing.  It has a more modern angle than most of the things we link, but we are all coming from the same place I think, a love of cars.  Worth some of your time to check it out and see what’s happening, particularly the slow motion videos : http://speedhunters.com/

I literally exclaimed out loud "this is the best thing ever", when I was browsing round the next site.  Jay Leno is a massive car fan, this is widely know, he also does TV, this is also widely know.  What you may not know about his is awesome website: Jay Leno's Garage where he takes you for video tours around the cars, giving you information about the models, his story of how he got them, what he likes and everything you wanted to know, it really shows his enthusiasm.  Amazing stuff.

I love Can Am cars, so, have a slice of what I love from 1967 at Road America.  In 2 parts :

Part 1

Part 2

Better late than never as they say.  Welcome to this/last week's linklog

We're really enjoying putting our little online magazine together and it is always nice to see other people doing similar things, so we were really pleased to be able to check out Kustomra'mag by the people at Kustomrama.com.

The first issue is now online and it is a great pictorial magazine so go and check it out: http://www.kustomramag.com/

We featured Dirk from Pixeleye before, but it is definitely worth checking out his blog: Raceblog.  For non-German speakers it translates well through google.  There is a whole bunch of photographs and videos to check out as well as news on events across Europe.

Keeping it hot rod and custom as seems to be the theme for this weeks link log I stumbled across this last week.  It is the blog of occasionally controversial Kustom car builder George Barris, it isn't updated often, but it is worth an hour or so trawling through the archives and links. http://avalonmm.tv/barris/

From hot rods and customs, and kustoms, we'll head off inevitable to drag cars.  Euro dragster has a great hall of fame area, you could do a lot worse than spending a while reading through the hall of fame and getting a useful who's who in UK drag racing. http://www.eurodragster.com/news/features/hall_of_fame/default.asp

Keeping it drag racing, this is a serious wheel stand!

Oh we have a treat for you this week, a really nice diverse selection of links,.

There is a lot to take in about the VW scene, it has a history and a level of activity that at times can rival the hot rod scene for depth, which can make it a fairly intimidating place to penetrate.  Fear not!  The Samba is here to help you.

The Samba is probably one of the most impressive single make sites on the internet, which masses of information, forums, for sale areas, reference data and,.. well,.. everything you could ever want to know about aircooled VWs.  Their dictionary is a great place to look up those VW terms that get casually dropped into conversations.

Being picture lovers we are also very keen on their gallery it really is a remarkable website.

Talking of things that just get dropped into conversation, we previously covered definitions for Bosozoku, Grachan, Shakotan and Kyusha-kai, however there are more things to know if you want to work towards complete knowledge of JDM things.  Luckily 7tune has come along and filled in some more gaps, head here to check it out.

We love to get under the skin of scenes and see things that we really wouldn't get the chance to see in real life, at least we would need to spend a fortune on plane flights to see them.  This is why we love the Jae Bueno blog, not only does it include some generally cool posts but it also is a great way to see what he has been photographing.  His flickr folders are a treasure trove for the American car and lowrider lovers out there.  Have a look around, there is some great stuff in there.

I kind of like finishing with a video, so this week I have this gem, onboard with a DTM BME E30 M3 at a Bergrennen event.

The sound is great and I want a go!...

Nostalgia drags are very cool, they show how drag racing has evolved and those awesome slingshots just look and sound the business.  So I was very pleased to come across this site for The Wild Bunch : http://the-wild-bunch.co.uk/ a great site for all things Nostalgia drag racing in the UK.  Dive in, the waters warm, and the engines loud.

Okay lets get one thing clear right now; I love Alfa Romeos.. There I said it, they may rust a bit, they may have some comedy electrics, they may have a certain amount of 'personality', but lets face it; They Rock!  With that in mind, check out this French site : http://hexenberg.free.fr/ it details the site owners own cars, which are cool in their own right, but the real gem is the galerie of events they have been to.  Top Notch.

Special bonus Alfa Romeo check out this special from the French Alfa Classic forum.

One of our favourite race series is underway, the Youngtimer Trophy in Germany.  Which means a whole bunch of results and photos updated on their excellent site.  It is pretty easy to navigate even for non-Germany speakers, so have a look around.  Or head straight to the galleries

I think another video is required as well, so check out Ford Super Van 3 from Evo Magazine

Back once again to entertain you, or at least give you some sites to check out over the weekend, its the linklog!

First up we're going to throw you a bit of a curve ball.  Have a modern modified car show, well at least the majority of it is.  From the land of insane power (that’s Sweden) comes the Bilsport Performance Show.  Check out 9 (yes 9!) galleries here:

http://www.stylingtorget.se/index.php?page=list_events

You can jump straight into the first one here.

http://www.stylingtorget.se/index.php?page=view_event&event_id=123

There is plenty in there to keep you busy, some great ideas all over the place, might just spark something in you and make you start chopping up your ride again!

We love an excuse to post a Japanese page, this one is a bit different though.  Check out a great selection of 2D and 3D computer artwork and some great paper craft.  Making your own Lancia Stratos in full on Blue Peter style is the closest most of us will get to owning one

http://homepage2.nifty.com/art66/

Another of those uninspiring designed sites that holds a wealth of information and images Old Stox is a collection of photos stock car racing in the UK from the 50's to the 70's.  It is really interesting to see the evolution of the motorsport.  It is also really good fun to check out what cars are lurking in the background of the images.

http://www.oldstox.com/

Finally we have a video that I very much enjoyed; Tony Mason details the success of the Escort in the RAC rally and then goes out with Roger Clark in a restored one.  Fantastic

Its that time of the week again, some links to get you through the weekend and give you some things to ponder.

http://loire-motors.com/

First up is this website for Japanese aircooled VW specialist Loire Motors.  We are currently working on a feature about the Japanese old school VW scene and this came up during our research.  Check out the "Snapshot" section for pictures of their cars in action.  The links section is worth a look through as well as a starting point for a serious browsing session.  Don't forget to keep Google Translates handy.

http://www.cncpics.com/main.php
This is an oldie for some people, but it is updated so often it is worth revisiting regularly.  The Cars and Coffee event in sunny California is a weekly gathering of all sorts of cars, mainly classic or exotic, often both classic and exotic!  The event is covered by a very dedicated photographer and images are shared online.  This is what it’s all about, getting together with friends and enjoying your cars.

http://www.motor-mania.org/
Our last two links are German, but that’s not so much a problem with the aforementioned Google Translates.  Motor Mania is a great blog that has feature cars as well as interesting stories from around the web.  German focussed it is a great chance to see what’s shaking in the heart of Europe.

http://www.youngtimer-scene.de/blog/
Again a German blog, this one is focussed on the Youngtimer scene in Germany.  This blog includes cars from the youngtimer trophy, a great looking racing series from Germany.  It is relatively new but is updated regularly and has occasional focus on Mercedes-Benz, particularly racing ones, which is certainly no bad thing.

See you next week.
